The Miami Heat are reportedly shopping guard Goran Dragic. President Pat Riley eyes to rebuild the team and immediately return to title contention. So far, the Heat are one of the worst teams in the league and recent reports claimed that no one is safe on their roster.
Zach Lowe of ESPN sees the Heat trading Dragic for assets they could use to rebuild the team. However, they are surely wanting to have a good return since they gave up much in order to acquire him in 2015.
“Flipping Dragic for future assets was their most obvious path to the bottom, but Miami’s injury situation has gotten so ugly, they don’t even have to do that! They’re 11-29, ahead of only the Nets. Teams will express interest in Dragic ahead of the trade deadline — a bunch, including the Magic, already did, per league sources — but Miami can hold out for a hefty return. They gave up a ton for Dragic, and they’d need to save face in any teardown trade,” Lowe wrote.
Here are the four teams who could trade for Goran Dragic before the February deadline:
As Lowe notes, the Orlando Magic are one of the teams who expressed interest in acquiring Dragic. The Magic revealed they’ll be active in trade talks and eye to add a scorer to their team. Also, they want to improve their backcourt and replace Elfrid Payton as their starting point guard.
Goran Dragic is definitely what the Magic need. In 33 games this season, he averaged 19 points and 4.6 assists. In order to acquire Dragic, the Magic could send a trade package centered on Bismack Biyombo to Miami. Biyombo signed a lucrative contract last summer and yet to prove his worth in Orlando.
The Sacramento Kings eye to end their 10-year playoff drought this season. Improving their backcourt should be taken into consideration and adding a quality point guard like Dragic would be a big plus. In October, Basketball Insider revealed that the Kings offered Rudy Gay and Darren Collison to Miami for Dragic.
However, the trade didn’t proceed for an unknown reason. Gay and Collison are set to become free agents and the Heat could lose Dragic for nothing. If the Kings could offer more, the Heat could possibly revive the trade talks.
The Philadelphia 76ers continue to “trust the process” despite their recent struggle this season. The arrival of Joel Embiid brings some optimism that they can be back to contention soon. The Sixers have a plethora of trade assets, including big men Jahlil Okafor and Nerlens Noel.
Embiid established an impressive performance in his rookie season and Ben Simmons will return soon. Acquiring a quality point guard like Goran Dragic will undeniably make them a better team in the succeeding years. The Sixers could offer one of their centers and future draft picks to the Heat for Dragic.
The Denver Nuggets remain optimistic of entering the playoffs this season. They are currently 15-23 in the 10th spot in the Western Conference. With plenty of trade assets, the Nuggets are undeniably an ideal trade partner with the Heat.
Nuggets starting point guard Emmanuel Mudiay has been a disappointment since he was drafted two years ago. A trade package center on Mudiay could be sent to the Heat in order to acquire Goran Dragic. Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra is a specialist in developing point guards, making the trade more realistic before the February deadline.
