Cleveland Cavaliers guard Iman Shumpert was arrested in Georgia last month for a lane change violation, which eventually resulted to being slapped with DUI and drug (marijuana) possession charges. The incident has also prompted the Cavs to reconsider trading Shumpert to increase the already formidable depth of the team.

According to sources, Shumpert may be the Cavs’ main bargaining chip in their talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves, to bring guard Ricky Rubio to Cleveland. Talks of Rubio’s trade have been circling online for weeks already, ever since the Wolves brought in Kris Dunn-the fifth overall pick in the 2016 draft. The team also has Zach LaVine, pushing out Rubio from possible playing time in the upcoming season.

Iman Shumpert also facing suspension

The incident, which happened early this month, happened as Shumpert left the home of a female friend. As he was driving, the NBA player failed to stay in his lane, which prompted law enforcers to flag down the driver.

Upon inspection, police noticed “a strong odor consistent with burnt marijuana emitting from the vehicle,” according to USA Today. They then proceeded to apply sobriety tests, all of which Shumpert failed. A closer examination of the Cavs guard’s vehicle also yielded a backpack that contained marijuana.

With current NBA policies, Shumpert could be facing months of suspension from the league, as well has his team. It may also be unlikely that the guard will be able to join Cleveland’s training camp before the start of the upcoming season.

Perfect time for Iman Shumpert-Ricky Rubio trade?

With the current scenario for both teams, it does raise the chances of a possible trade between Shumpert and Rubio. Website Hoops Habit even consider Rubio as the perfect match for Kyrie Irving’s backcourt.

“Ricky Rubio would be the perfect complement to Irving and fit for the Cavaliers,” shared Hoops Habit writer Jamyson Frierson. “Rubio would finally have a chance to play for a championship if he were traded to the Cavs. His overall scoring is still a work in progress, but his passing ability is close to being elite.”
