Joel Embiid’s rookie year officially begins two years after he joined the league. The third overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft suffered injuries that cause him to miss the last two seasons but rumors and speculations state that he can immediately make an impact in his “first” year and become a “centerpiece” for the Philadelphia 76ers on the defensive end.

Can Embiid make a defensive impact like Dikembe Mutombo, who was one of the greatest defensive players to play basketball and also played for Philadelphia?

According to Sixers head coach Brett Brown, via Hoops Habit, Embiid must become the “crown jewel, the centerpiece” to Philadelphia’s defense. This will be a great development for Philadelphia if it happens in the 2016-2017 NBA Season because they already have great offensive players with the likes of Dario Saric, Jahlil Okafor and Ben Simmons in the frontcourt.

The Sixers are involved in a lot of NBA rumors in the 2016 offseason mainly because they have an overloaded frontcourt. Okafor and another big man Nerlens Noel are reportedly on the trading block with the management and coaching wanting a more “balanced roster” before the NBA season begins.

Both Okafor and Noel have been linked to other NBA teams like the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves but no deal has been finalized despite the many NBA rumors.

The key for the Sixers would be Joel Embiid’s play next season. He can be the next Dikembe Mutombo on defense with his length and athleticism but he also has more potential on offense than the legendary center. If Embiid shows his potential early, trading one of Noel or Okafor will be an easy decision for the franchise.
