Jarrett Jack will hold an “open audition” in trying to convince teams he can still contribute in the NBA after a knee injury last season. The Atlanta Hawks cut Jack last October but there are reports that some teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, are interested in the veteran point guard.

Another veteran point guard that is in consideration for the Cavs is Mario Chalmers. But like Jack, he is also coming off a major surgery.

Cavs want to add quality back-up PG

The defending champions need help at the back-up PG position. Jack appears a good fit with LeBron James’ team, which has struggled with injuries this season. Chalmers’ chemistry and history with LeBron might give him the inside track in getting the reserve spot for the Cavs.

Marc Stein of ESPN tweeted the Jack’s and Chalmers’ updates on Wednesday:

Jack suffered a torn ACL last year when he was with the Brooklyn Nets and was waived by the team. He signed a deal with Atlanta in June but was cut before the season started.

Chalmers was a former teammate of LeBron with the Miami Heat and was part of their two-time championship team (2012 and 2013). Chalmers was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2015 but was waived by the team after he suffered from a season-ending injury (Achilles tendon).

Before the injuries, both Jack and Chalmers looked good as back-up point guards. In 32 games for the Nets last year, Jack averaged 12.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 7.4 assists.

Meanwhile, Chalmers averaged 10.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 55 games for the Grizzlies before getting hurt.

Which veteran point guard fits better with the Cavaliers? The defending champs have young guards DeAndre Liggins and Kay Felder as back-ups this season but they want more experience from that spot the rest of the year and the playoffs.

Jarrett Jack or Mario Chalmers provide veteran leadership and experience off the bench.
