The Orlando Magic made a big trade on draft night as they acquired Serge Ibaka from the Oklahoma City Thunder. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Magic will be aggressive in free agency and they may target Jeremy Lin and Harrison Barnes.
The Magic traded Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova, and 11th overall pick Domantas Sabonis to the Thunder for Ibaka. Many fans and analysts thought they were robbed in the deal but they are heading towards the right direction. Nonetheless, general manager Rob Hennigan now focuses his attention on free agency.
According to Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinal, Orlando needs a veteran presence, shooters and good backup point guard for Elfrid Payton. He noted that the Magic can sign two max contract players but Mike Conley, DeMar DeRozan, and Bradley Beal likely won’t consider Orlando.
Robbins suggested Jeremy Lin, who played tremendously well for the Charlotte Hornets last season, as a possible veteran presence and backup point guard. Lin has expressed his desire start and he can easily relegate Payton to the bench if he plays really well.
On the other hand, the Magic will likely re-sign Evan Fournier and he will be the starting shooting guard. Mario Hezonja and Aaron Gordon may be slotted into the small forward position but Orlando has better options in free agency.
Harrison Barnes will fit perfectly with the Magic, assuming that the Golden State Warriors sign Kevin Durant. If they can’t, the Warriors have the right to match any offers for Barnes. He is looking for a max deal but his performance in the final three games of the NBA Finals might have affected his value.
The Magic will have a lot of competition for the signature of Jeremy Lin and Harrison Barnes. Lin has been linked with teams such as the Rockets, Knicks, Nets and Mavericks while Barnes is rumored to be a target of the Suns and Lakers.
