Kevin Durant has dominated the NBA rumors headlines in the 2016 offseason as he is the top free agent in the market this summer. The latest is that the Oklahoma City Thunder superstar might want to take a short term one-year deal in OKC this offseason to maximize the value of his future contract and as well as give himself a chance to reconsider his options next summer, if the Thunder fails to win the title again.
According to an ESPN Insider report, the San Antonio Spurs are a “logical option” in the 2017 offseason for Durant, if the OKC superstar chooses to sign a one-year deal with the Thunder this summer. Signing a short term deal also means that he gets to wait on the status of fellow Thunder Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka, both of whom have expiring contracts after the 2016-2017 NBA Season.
The NBA rumors are that Durant, if he chooses to stay in OKC, will sign a 1+1 deal with the Thunder this summer. The plus one should be a player option for Durant and he can opt out after the 2016-2017 season if he does not like what is happening with the Thunder with regards to their title chances and roster moves.
However, this is a risky option for Durant, who has struggled with some injuries in recent years. Durant has been linked to many NBA teams this 2016 offseason being the top free agent with teams like the Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, Boston Celtics and others as possible free agent destinations.
NBA rumors will continue to surround Kevin Durant but he is expected to decide early in free agency, when it officially opens on July 1.
