Kevin Durant joined the Golden State Warriors this 2016 offseason to become one of the most hated and criticized players in the league. On Tuesday, NBA rumors surfaced that the superstar told former teammate Russell Westbrook that he would be returning to the Oklahoma City Thunder before he signed with the Warriors.

According to Royce Young of ESPN, Durant told Westbrook that he’s “coming back” to OKC and that Westbrook should not “worry about it”, referring to his free agency decision.

“Kevin Durant, more so than even that, was telling people, “Hey, yeah, I mean I’m coming back.” Like I said in there, a week before Kevin Durant sat down in the Hamptons, he was in Oklahoma City ready to make an offer on a multi-million-dollar house,” Young stated via ESPN Radio.

“So, the guy was pretty serious about coming back, and then things turned rather quickly for him to leave. And there’s no doubt that the organization felt a little bit burned by this.”

However, on July 4, Durant announced that he would be joining Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green in Golden State after also being pursued by the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs and Thunder in free agency.

The move drew criticism from various quarters including fans and former NBA players, who claimed that Durant joining a “super team” like the Warriors was a weak move for the superstar. Others have defended KD and his right to join a team he wants to play with.

In recent days, there are NBA rumors that claims that Russell Westbrook was “hurt” and shocked by Durant’s decision in the summer. Westbrook is also involved in speculations at this point of the offseason that he may be on his way out of the Thunder because OKC does not want to risk losing another superstar next offseason.

Durant signed a two-year deal worth over $54 million with the Warriors. As a restricted free agent, the Thunder had no choice but to let him go in free agency.
