Oklahoma City Thunder star forward Kevin Durant is reportedly meeting six teams whom could possibly be his next destination next season.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of the Vertical, Kevin Durant is planning to host free-agency meetings at a singular location on July 1. The six teams include the Boston Celtics, Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder.
Based on the teams that he is interested in signing with, Kevin Durant prefers a team that can be a title contender and not a rebuilding team. This means that the Washington Wizards and the Los Angeles Lakers are out of the list to be his possible destination.
The New York Knicks, who first made their move by acquiring Derrick Rose, seemed to have lost their chance to acquire the Thunder small forward. With the recent revelations, it seems like the ‘basketball decision’ that Kevin Durant is talking about in the upcoming free agency basically means winning an NBA championship title next season.
Marc Stein of ESPN reported that the most likely scenario for Durant this summer is to re-sign a two-year deal with the Thunder that includes a player option for the 2017-18 NBA season. This would allow him to return in 2017 free agency alongside teammate Russell Westbrook.
The Oklahoma City Thunder showed Kevin Durant that they are serious about improving their team’s roster. The Thunder traded Serge Ibaka for Magic’s Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova and 11th overall pick Domantas Sabonis. Many have praised this move by the Thunder and said that this could be a signal for Durant to think twice before signing with other teams.
However, with the list of teams currently battling to acquire Durant, there is still a higher possibility that he will leave. There are speculations that Kevin Durant is near in signing with the Golden State Warriors. Reports are saying that Durant is not only interested in signing with the Warriors because of Curry but also the team’s connections to Silicon Valley.
As free agency draws near, more teams are expected to join the list to pursue Kevin Durant. However, they should make the best offer to acquire the top free agent of 2016.
