The New York Knicks and the Portland Trail Blazers are reportedly having trade talks involving Portland’s 2017 first-round pick and small forward Moe Harkless. The Knicks are eyeing to acquire young players who will fit with the timeline of Kristaps Porzingis and Willy Hernangomez.
Knicks president Phil Jackson is seriously considering rebuilding the team with the potential departure of Carmelo Anthony this offseason. As most people think, Porzingis is already in a position to be the Knicks’ next franchise player. The Latvian center continues to improve his game and showed his capability to lead the Knicks in the succeeding years.
NBA Trade Rumors: Knicks want additional first-round pick
If the Knicks intend to build around him, they must consider acquiring young assets who fit with his time frame. In the NBA draft lottery, the Knicks grabbed the No. 8 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft. French prospect Frank Ntilikina, Kentucky guard Malik Monk and NC State guard Dennis Smith Jr. emerged as the top options for the Knicks in June.
Ian Begley of ESPN revealed that the Knicks are exploring the possibility of acquiring a late first-round pick in the upcoming draft. The Knicks started having trade discussions with the Portland Trail Blazers. The Trail Blazers own three first-round picks in the upcoming draft, including the 15th, 20th, and 26th overall picks.
The Knicks already hosted workouts for draft prospects who could be selected in the mid-to-late first round. These include North Carolina forward Justin Jackson, big man Tony Bradley, Kentucky’s Bam Adebayo and Colorado’s Derrick White. Aside from the first-round pick, Portland’s small forward Moe Harkless is also part of the discussion. Having nearly $133 million in guaranteed contracts next season, the Trail Blazers are expected to shed some salary this offseason.
NBA Rumors: Carmelo Anthony trade to Portland Trail Blazers possible
As of now, it remains a mystery what the Knicks offered to the Trail Blazers in the trade talks. Last month, Blazers general manager Neil Olshey stated that they are willing to trade their first-round picks in the upcoming draft to acquire an “impact player.” This opens up the possibility that Carmelo Anthony could be part of the deal.
Anthony will be a great addition to Portland playing alongside Damian Lillard, C.J. McCollum, and Jusuf Nurkic. However, the Knicks can’t move Anthony without his consent since he has a no-trade clause in his contract. So far, the trade talks between the Knicks and the Trail Blazers are still in the early stages and expected to heat up as the 2017 NBA draft draws near.
