Rumors and speculations are now swirling around the New York Knicks who are reportedly interested in acquiring Blake Griffin from the Los Angeles Clippers. Should the Knicks give up Kristaps Porzingis for the superstar PF?
Blake Griffin has been frequently mentioned in various trade rumors this offseason. The Los Angeles Clippers are reluctant to break their ‘Big Three’ and still hoping to contend for the title next season.
However, it remains questionable on how they can beat the Golden State Warriors, who recently added Kevin Durant on their team.
In the 2017 offseason, the Clippers will be facing the same situation as the Oklahoma City Thunder where two of their superstars, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, are set to become free agents. However, coach Doc Rivers remains optimistic that CP3 and Griffin will return to the Clippers next summer.
“The Celtics and us and Oklahoma [City], we all thought we were going to get Kevin Durant,” Rivers said. “I don’t have a problem with that, I really don’t. I think the players have a right. They take the risk of being free agents.”
Last season, the Clippers managed to survive and enter the playoffs even if Blake Griffin missed most of the games due to injury and suspension. Griffin returned in time when the Clippers were battling against the Portland Trail Blazers. However, when Chris Paul suffered an injury, the Trail Blazers took the series and eliminated the Clippers.
There is no doubt that the ‘Big Three’ keeps the Clippers from being one of the toughest team in the league. However, their expensive contracts are also limiting the team from making improvements on their roster. If the Clippers fails to make it to the finals again, there is a higher possibility that this will be the last season that Chris Paul and Blake Griffin will play together in one team.
In a suggested trade scenario, the Clippers will be sending Blake Griffin to the New York Knicks for a package deal centered on Kristaps Porzingis. The 21-year-old power forward/center has established an impressive performance in his rookie season averaging 14.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game.
Porzingis may not be a superstar caliber like Griffin but there is no doubt that he is on the right path to stardom. The outcome of the 2016-17 NBA season will play a major role in the Clippers’ decision whether they will keep their ‘Big Three’ or start rebuilding the team.
NBA fans should note that these are just rumors that may or may not happen before the trade deadline, or not at all. Should the Clippers and the Knicks pull the trigger, it will surely for the benefit of both teams to improve their roster.
