NBA Rumors of Jordan Clarkson not joining the Philippines basketball national team for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Manila in July 2016 has made the rounds after the Filipino-American guard injured his foot in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday.
The Lakers lost to the Clippers via a blowout, 103-81 and Clarkson’s foot was stepped on in a play where he was seen in some pain. Clarkson started the game and played 31 minutes but did not finish it. He ended up with 10 points on 4 of 13 shooting.
X-Rays on Clarkson’s foot came up negative and according to injury reports he is dealing with a bruised right fibula and the injury is seen as a minor one. However, with his contract expiring for the Lakers, the injury development could be bad for the Philippines, who is recruiting Clarkson to play for their national team in the Olympic qualifiers set from July 5 to 10 in Manila, Philippines.
It’s an NBA rumor for now but with Clarkson’s situation, the Filipino-American could choose to miss playing for the Philippines as he is expected to prioritize getting his next contract, expected to be a big one where he could earn about $7 to $10 million per season.
Even before the injury, Clarkson’s commitment to the Philippine national team is not known as he has yet to be cleared by his NBA team, the Lakers and basketball’s governing body, FIBA.
However, with the recent foot injury, the NBA rumors of Clarkson not playing for the Philippines could become a reality as remaining healthy could be his number one priority as he searches for his first big money contract in the league.
