The Los Angeles Lakers may shop D’Angelo Russell to acquire a top five pick. However, the latest rumors suggest that the Lakers are looking forward to land former MVP Derrick Rose by trading Russell this summer.
It still remains unclear whether the Chicago Bulls will trade their star point guard or not. However, Rose is set to become a free agent this summer, as reported by the Sports Rageous on Sunday. Chicago is looking to make a big trade this summer and chances are the Bulls will consider trading Jimmy Butler instead of Rose.
The Lakers have traditionally been one of the most intriguing teams of the post season for initiating big moves. They will only serve to prove their reputation when they shop young point guard Russell this summer.
Why are the Lakers looking at Rose?
The Lakers are looking to bounce back in the coming season under new coach Luke Walton. The franchise possesses the most exciting young core of the league. They also own the second overall pick, and are likely to pick Brandon Ingram on the draft night. To upgrade their roster in an effort to become a playoff contender, the Los Angeles Lakers are eyeing to add some experience to their roster as Kobe Bryant has retired. A swap of 20-year-old Russell with former MVP Rose would definitely make sense in this regard.
Moreover, the Bulls’ guard has posted decent numbers this season. Rose ended up averaging 16.4 points, 4.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. He shot 42.7 percent from the floor overall and knocked down 29.3 percent from behind the three-point arc, according to the Forbes.
The numbers are slightly better than Russell’s performance in his rookie season. The New York Knicks have also targeted Rose this summer, according to a report published in Sports Rageous on Sunday.
Rose’s inclusion would make the Lakers back-court more consistent and reliable. Charles Rahrig of the Fansided.com pointed out that Chicago could be an ideal destination for the young Lakers’ guard.
