Rumors and speculations are swirling around the Orlando Magic new head coach Frank Vogel and Indiana Pacers president Larry Bird who are reportedly having a dispute about their conversation before Vogel was fired as Pacers‘ head coach.
Frank Vogel was fired by the Indiana Pacers after the team’s disappointing loss to the Toronto Raptors in round one of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Pacers president Larry Bird decided not to renew Vogel’s contract after realizing that he was not the type of coach that can execute his preferred system for the team. Bird wants the Pacers to play a ‘small ball’ offensive strategy.
According to Yahoo Sports, Bird released some information in a press conference and said that Frank Vogel begged to be reconsidered as Pacers head coach.
“We talked for probably a half hour on the phone. He was trying to talk me out of this decision.”
However, Frank Vogel denied Bird’s claim, saying that it was an inaccurate perception of what he said. Vogel denied that he begged to stay with the team and added that he respected Bird’s decision.
“I was OK with that. Larry’s going to speak his mind. A lot of people talked to me about it who didn’t like that and it’s probably an inaccurate perception that I was begging him to stay. … I fully respect Larry and the process. He knew it was going to be an unpopular move, but he did what he had to do.
“I felt like we were on the verge of some big things. We stood toe-to-toe with a 56-win team. I told my team after the series that were poised … I felt like I was going to be able to do that with this group. That was my only mention to Larry.”
On the other hand, Frank Vogel is now currently rebuilding the Orlando Magic after replacing Scott Skiles as head coach. It might be another challenge for the veteran coach, but he is expected to reciprocate his achievements in the Indiana Pacers to the Orlando Magic. He is in charge of developing the Magic’s young roster and to sign a superstar in the upcoming free agency.
