Many were surprised after the Grizzlies management fired coach Dave Joerger. The decision came after the disappointing loss of the team against the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the Western Conference playoff series. The Grizzlies play without their stars Mike Conley and Marc Gasol, who are both suffering from injury, so some said that it can be still considered an achievement for the team.
However, the decision has been made and Dave Joerger is already the new head coach of the Sacramento Kings. Before being the Grizzlies head coach, Joerger worked under Lionel Hollins as an assistant coach for nearly five seasons before the Grizzlies decided not to renew his contract in the 2012-13 NBA season.
Hollins familiarity with the Grizzlies core players, including Mike Conley, Tony Allen, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, can be one of the reasons why the team wants to consider him for the head coach position. Also, he was labelled as the Grizzlies’ all-time winningest coach with a 214-201 regular-season record and managed to bring the team in the Western Conference finals in 2013.
Other candidates that the Memphis Grizzlies are considering for the head coach position includes former Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Ettore Messina, former Cleveland Cavaliers coach David Blatt, former Phoenix Suns coach Jeff Hornacek, former Golden State Warriors head coach Mark Jackson, former New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy and former Denver Nuggets coach Brian Shaw.
There have been no details yet on when will the Memphis Grizzlies announce their new head coach. But for sure, they are making an intense study in choosing the right person to lead the team next season.
