Hassan Whiteside will be looking to get paid big this coming summer as he enters free agency. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Miami Heat are interested in signing him to a max contract.
The 26-year-old center has been on a tear since the All-Star break. Whiteside is averaging 18.0 points and 13.7 rebounds per game while shooting more than 60 percent from the field. The big man is really proving his value to the Heat after being given the opportunity last season.
NBC Sports notes that only one team can offer Whiteside the max deal he’s seeking and it’s the Miami Heat. The annual salary is believed to be about $23 million annually but there are still question marks about Whiteside’s overall game and attitude.
The Heat are going to evaluate the center’s play during the playoffs to know how much money will be brought to the table, per the Miami Herald. There is also the fact that no contract extension negotiations with Whiteside can happen until July.
“They haven’t talked about [free agency]. They want to see how far we get this season with this team. Playoffs will speak a lot. I hope [there’s interest]. I like the organization. Pat Riley is always going to do a great job of adding people that are going to help you win. It’s not hard to sell to come to Miami. You can always recruit great talent,” Whiteside told the Miami Herald.
The report added that Heat president Pat Riley, team executive Alonzo Mourning and his teammates are very happy with Whiteside. Riley and Mourning recently talked with the big man, not about free agency but told him how proud they are of his development.
However, there will be other teams that can lure Whiteside away from South Beach. In a previous report about NBA rumors, it’s noted that the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks are interested in signing him.
