The San Antonio Spurs event after winning 67 games in the regular season got eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in six games in the Western Conference semifinals. NBA rumors out of San Antonio are that the Spurs now want to go younger this offseason and will target some of the top free agents in the market.
However, the Spurs might also add another veteran even as the team awaits the decision of their old guys in Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili to retire or extend their NBA careers. According to the San Antonio News Express, Pau Gasol, who played last season with the Chicago Bulls but could hit free agency, is an available option.
“The Spurs will try to make a play for some of the summer’s biggest fish — including Kevin Durant, Al Horford and Mike Conley — but there also could be other available options. Pau Gasol, at 35, is older than some of the other names on the market, but will come at a more economical cost,” Jeff McDonald wrote via expressnews.com.
“Coach Gregg Popovich said Friday he would like to inject the bench with more youth and athleticism, so look for the Spurs to make moves in that direction.”
Getting Gasol would be inconsistent with the Spurs’ plan to go younger and more athletic next season but the Spanish big man is still very serviceable basing on his last year’s numbers with the Bulls. Gasol in Chicago did not make the postseason but he averaged 16.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in 72 games for the Bulls in the 2015-2016 season making him one of the players involved as top targets in NBA rumors this offseason.
Gasol with the Spurs could come off the bench or start alongside LaMarcus Aldridge. He is known as one of the best passing big men in the NBA, which means that he could be a right fit with the Spurs, which is known for their team play.
NBA rumors will continue to surround the Spurs this summer. Will getting a Pau Gasol solve their problems from this season?
