Chicago Bulls center Pau Gasol decided to decline his player option for the 2016-17 NBA season and explore the free agency market. Despite having strong consideration from other teams, rumors are circulating that Gasol eyes to return to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Los Angeles Lakers are currently undergoing a rebuilding process and this includes a huge adjustment to their roster. Lakers new head coach Luke Walton will take over of the team after they fired Byron Scott. Many predicted that this move by the Lakers will attract multiple free agents.
However, with the free agency officially in, there are doubts if the Lakers could land a superstar free agent like Kevin Durant, DeMar DeRozan or Hassan Whiteside. This may lead them to consider other free agents if they don’t want to become empty handed once again.
Pau Gasol can still be a perfect fit with the Lakers. He is currently averaging 16.5 points, 11 rebounds in his 72 games with the Chicago Bulls. The Lakers are currently in need of a veteran big man to give a boost to their frontcourt and were reportedly considering other options.
Neil Greenberg of the Washington Post emphasized that the Lakers need to acquire a star center in free agency. Roy Hibbert, who can be considered the only legitimate center of the Lakers, is threatened to leave since he will also become a free agent. Robert Sacre and Ivica Zubac are obviously not ready to be a starter.
The Lakers have plenty of options but that does not mean that they could get one. Hassan Whiteside and Al Horford were among the free agent centers reportedly on the Lakers’ wish list. However, the competition for the two big men is tough since they are also pursued by other powerhouse teams.
The Los Angeles Lakers will not be having a hard time setting an appointment with Pau Gasol since they have established a strong bond. Gasol was considered one of NBA’s most reliable frontcourt and most of his best performance were seen in the Memphis Grizzlies and the Los Angeles Lakers.
