The Los Angeles Clippers are currently facing the Utah Jazz in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. After losing in Game 1, the Clippers managed to bounce back and tie the series in Game 2. The outcome of the NBA Playoffs 2017 will be crucial as it will determine if Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and DeAndre Jordan will still consider playing together next season.
Paul and Griffin will become free agents in the upcoming offseason. Though both of them expressed their intention to re-sign, the Clippers will be needing to throw away a huge amount of money to keep their core intact. As of now, they have second highest salary next to the reigning NBA champions, Cleveland Cavaliers.
Since Paul, Griffin, and Jordan played together in Los Angeles, their only greatest achievement was reaching the Western Conference Semifinals. Some people considered the 2016-17 NBA season as the final chance of Clippers’ “Big Three” to prove themselves. If they fail to at least enter the West Finals, this could be the last season that they will play together in one team.
NBA Rumors: Time to dump Blake Griffin
On Wednesday’s episode of “The Herd”, Colin Cowherd believes the Clippers should consider shaking up their roster if they fall short once again in the playoffs. Cowherd suggests the Clippers to part ways with Blake Griffin and start rebuilding the team around Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan.
“I’ve got to tell you something, I’d move Blake,” Cowherd said. “They’re not winning the championship [with this team], OK? As Blake gets less athletic … last night he had one three. Everything else was two feet away. I’ve already got the big guy inside! And I think we’re overselling Blake Griffin.”
Fox Sports’ Chris Broussard also gave a similar opinion. The Clippers’ “Big Three” continues to establish impressive performance every game. However, they are still unable to surpass West powerhouse teams like the San Antonio Spurs and the Golden State Warriors.
NBA Rumors: Paul George as Blake Griffin’s replacement?
Broussard sees Paul George as the perfect replacement for Griffin. George wants to be in Los Angeles and play for the Lakers. However, with the current status of the purple and gold, the Clippers proved to be a better destination for the Indiana Pacers star.
Cowherd believes George will demand a trade this summer if the Cleveland Cavaliers sweep the Pacers in the first round. The new “Big Three” of Paul George, Chris Paul, and DeAndre Jordan will surely dominate the Western Conference next season.
“If Paul George goes to Larry Bird, if they lose this series, [and says] ‘I’m just leaving town. So you can get something for me or nothing.’ Chris Paul, Paul George, and DeAndre Jordan? I’ll say it right now – that’s a real threat to win the West,” Cowherd said.
