The Boston Celtics will have an opportunity the add another talented player on their team after acquiring the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft lottery. However, Paul Pierce believes that the Celtics should trade the pick for a superstar in the upcoming offseason.

After the NBA draft lottery results were announced, Paul Pierce took the credit after the Celtics grabbed the No. 1 overall pick. Pierce was part of the blockbuster trade that gave the Celtics multiple first-round picks from the Brooklyn Nets. Their decision to trade their aging superstars proved to be the right move as they immediately return to title contention.

Should the Boston Celtics trade the No. 1 pick?

As of now, the Celtics are competing in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Their Game 1 loss showed that their current roster is not enough to take down the reigning NBA champions. According to Paul Pierce, instead of adding another young player, the Celtics should use the No. 1 pick to acquire a superstar this summer.

“You trade this pick, because he cannot help the Celtics get over the top,” Pierce said about Markelle Fultz, who most everyone expects to be the top pick next month. “You’re a 50-win team, you’re the No. 1 seed. You have to build on this momentum. If you can acquire a Paul George, Jimmy Butler, or Gordon from Utah, you have to do it.”

In most mock drafts, the Celtics are expected to select Washington Huskies star Markelle Fultz as the first overall pick of the 2017 NBA draft. However, it remains questionable if Fultz will be a good fit in Boston since they already have Isaiah Thomas as their point guard. As most people think, it will be better for the Celtics to use their pick to acquire at least one superstar this summer.

NBA Rumors: Paul George, Jimmy Butler to Boston Celtics

Several NBA teams who want to rebuild the team will surely be interested in having the No. 1 pick. If Paul George will refuse to sign a contract extension, the Indiana Pacers are expected to make him available on the trade market this summer. Before the February deadline, the Celtics and the Pacers engaged in trade talks about George but failed to reach an agreement.

Meanwhile, the Celtics have been pursuing Jimmy Butler since the last offseason. If the Chicago Bulls decide to undergo a full-scale rebuild, Butler is expected to return on the trading block. Acquiring Butler or George will undeniably strengthen the Celtics’ chance in dominating the Eastern Conference next season.
