Rumors and speculations are now swirling around the New Orleans Pelicans who are reportedly trading for Jimmy Butler of the Chicago Bulls this summer. Should the Bulls trade their superstar and undergo a full-scale rebuild?
After winning the first two games, the Bulls suffered fourth straight losses against the Boston Celtics in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. In the upcoming offseason, the Bulls will be making a tough decision regarding the franchise’s future. According to Shams Charania of The Vertical, the Bulls may consider continue building around Jimmy Butler or completely rebuild the team.
“Should Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf remain loyal to president John Paxson, general manager Gar Forman and coach Fred Hoiberg, a new course must be charted for these Bulls, a decision to rebuild responsibly around Butler and possibly one of Wade or Rondo – or retool entirely,” Charania wrote.
NBA Trade: New Orleans Pelicans want Jimmy Butler
Before the February deadline, the Pelicans succeeded to improve their roster with the acquisition of DeMarcus Cousins. Unfortunately, they still failed to earn a playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Pelicans will continue upgrading their roster this summer and reportedly interested in trading for Jimmy Butler.
According to Amico Hoops, the Pelicans are expected to be a “strong suitor” for Butler once the Bulls make him available on the trade market. However, it remains questionable if the Pelicans have enough assets that could entice the Bulls. As most people think, New Orleans will need to part ways with either DeMarcus Cousins or Anthony Davis in order to acquire Butler from Chicago.
Keeping Jimmy Butler, Dwyane Wade, and Rajon Rondo
As of now, the Bulls show no strong indication of making Butler available again on the trade market. The 27-year-old small forward expressed his intention to stay in Chicago. He would greatly appreciate if Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo will rejoin him next season. Wade believes it’s too early to make a decision regarding his player option.
However, he already revealed in the past that he’ll only stay if the Bulls will keep Butler. Meanwhile, the Bulls will be the one making the decision regarding Rondo’s future. When asked if he would like Rondo’s team option to be picked up, Butler immediately gave an answer.
“Of course,” Butler said when asked about if he preferred the Bulls to guarantee Rondo for next season. “He’s been huge for us this year, molding the young guys and getting in the film room. The way he plays the game, getting everyone involved, I love playing with him and D-Wade.”
