The Philadelphia 76ers are reportedly planning to upgrade their backcourt in the upcoming offseason. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Sixers are interested in acquiring Miami Heat shooting guard Dion Waiters in free agency.
The Sixers end the 2016-17 NBA season at the 14th spot in the Eastern Conference with a 28-54 win-loss record. They will miss the NBA playoffs for fifth consecutive season. As of now, they are already keeping their eyes in the upcoming offseason where they will be busy upgrading their roster.
NBA Rumors: Dion Waiters to the Philadelphia 76ers
In the past years, the Sixers succeeded to acquire talented big men as the results of their years of tanking. Joel Embiid and Dario Saric managed to show their potentials this season and proved that they’re ready to continue the Sixers’ legacy. Meanwhile, Ben Simmons, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2016 NBA draft, is already cleared to play after suffering an injury last summer.
In the upcoming offseason, the Sixers are expected to upgrade their backcourt. Kansas’ Josh Jackson, Duke’s Jayson Tatum and Florida State’s Jonathan Isaac could be on the Sixers’ radar as 2017 NBA draft targets. However, Philadelphia could also explore the free agency market for talented guards.
Recently, Dan Favale of Bleacher Report created a list of free agents whose teams will not be entering the NBA playoffs and their potential landing spot. Included in the list is Miami Heat shooting guard Dion Waiters linking him to the Sixers.
“T.J. McConnell is scrappy and all, but the idea of using Waiters and his 39.4 percent three-point clip at point guard isn’t one the Philadelphia 76ers should pass on. Waiters can split ball-handling duties with Ben Simmons as he does Goran Dragic, and his pick-and-roll potential next to Joel Embiid would be through the roof. Bring him home, Philly,” Favale wrote.
NBA Rumors: Dion Waiters plans to re-sign with the Heat
Dion Waiters managed to make a huge impact since joining the Heat last summer. He will undeniably be a great addition in Philadelphia. However, the Sixers should make a quick move once free agency hits as Waiters has already expressed his intention to re-sign with the Heat.
“I want to get it done as quick as possible,” Waiters said, hoping Heat long term interest is mutual. “Let’s keep this thing rolling by any means. I don’t want to go into free agency with a couple days and make a decision. I know where I want to be. Let’s just get it done. My mom loves it here. Would be mad at me [if I left]. My son loves it. My family loves it.”
