The Phoenix Suns are officially in rebuilding mode following a successful NBA draft and they have been linked with several NBA rumors throughout the summer. Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight are the most rumored trade candidates but what about Tyson Chandler? Should the Suns trade the veteran center?
The Suns drafted Dragan Bender, Marquese Chriss and Tyler Ulis in the recent NBA draft while they also have Devin Booker as the face of the franchise, per NBA.com. They also have Alex Len continuing to show his potential last season which means they could look to trade Tyson Chandler before the deadline.
In an interview with ESPN’s The Jump earlier this June, Chandler revealed that he is not asking for a trade but if the Suns management wants to go even young, he is very open about it.
“Me and management have a great relationship and we communicate. If there is a decision and they want to go young and stay young, then we’ll have that conversation. But we’re not there,” Chandler said.
One possible trade the Suns can explore for the 2011 NBA champion is dealing him to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Wilson Chandler. Before any Suns fans get mad or react negatively, there are three reasons that it will work for the team.
First is the trade works in terms of salary cap, per ESPN Trade Machine. Both players have three years on their deal and their salaries are nearly identical. The Suns get Wilson Chandler, who can play the small forward spot and become a possible replacement for P.J. Tucker if he leaves via free agency next year.
As for the Denver Nuggets, they will get a veteran NBA center to backup Nikola Jokic. The Serbian center can learn a lot from Tyson Chandler defensively. The timing of their deals is perfectly aligned since Jokic is eligible to sign an extension when TC’s contract expires.
Second, the Suns training staff is known for their top-notch ability to keep players healthy. Wilson Chandler is coming off two hip surgeries and he would be nursed back to health in Phoenix.
Lastly, Alex Len will get ample playing time to develop further while also opening up minutes for Dragan Bender and Marquese Chriss. The Suns have a great future ahead with Devin Booker at the helm. They can also get younger by trading either Eric Bledsoe or Brandon Knight while also securing a top pick in next year’s loaded draft.
