The Toronto Raptors were two wins away from their very first NBA Finals appearance but the Cleveland Cavaliers had too much firepower. NBA rumors have linked the Raptors and the Atlanta Hawks’ Paul Millsap this offseason and one writer suggested a sign-and-trade scenario that will work for both teams involved.
The glaring weakness the Raptors had all season was the power forward position. They had players such as Luis Scola, Patrick Patterson, James Johnson and Jason Thompson. However, none of those players are consistent and not starter quality players.
According to TSN Canada, the Raptors tried to acquire Paul Millsap from the Hawks at the trade deadline but they got rebuffed. They also reportedly tried to acquire Serge Ibaka from the Oklahoma City Thunder on draft night. However, the Orlando Magic’s offer centered on Victor Oladipo was better.
Matthew Alman of Raptors Rupture suggested before the 2016 NBA Draft that the Raptors can trade Terrence Ross, Patterson and the 9th overall pick to the Hawks for Millsap. No word if Atlanta was selling but Toronto ended up drafting Jakob Poeltl.
Now, Alman suggests a new trade scenario that can make the Hawks say yes. He opined that the Raptors re-sign Bismack Biyombo and immediately trade him to Atlanta along with Patterson and Lucas Nogueira.
The Hawks are still the favorite to re-sign Al Horford but he could end up going elsewhere which could change the team’s plan. They already traded Jeff Teague to the Indiana Pacers and if Horford bolts out of Atlanta, the Hawks will likely let go of Millsap who can opt out of his deal after the upcoming season.
It should be noted that these are all just speculations and suggestions but there is a real possibility that Horford will leave Atlanta. That move would be beneficial for the Raptors, which is one impact player like Millsap away from defeating the Cavaliers.
