The Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly eyeing to trade Ricky Rubio in the upcoming offseason and look for their new starting point guard in the free agency market. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Timberwolves will pursue Jrue Holiday, Jeff Teague, or George Hill if Rubio will be traded.

Since the 2016 NBA draft, Ricky Rubio has been frequently mentioned in various NBA trade rumors. The Timberwolves’ decision to draft Kris Dunn as the No. 5 overall pick created the belief that Rubio’s days in Minnesota are numbered. Unfortunately, Dunn failed to show massive improvement in his rookie season as Rubio stays as Timberwolves starting point guard.

NBA Rumors: Ricky Rubio to New York Knicks

However, this does stop the rumors from swirling around the Spanish guard. Last month, Ian Begley of ESPN revealed that the New York Knicks will revisit their interest on Ricky Rubio. The Knicks tried to acquire him before the February trade deadline but the Timberwolves refused to part ways with the veteran guard.

“Some in the organization were hopeful after the trade deadline that they could revisit their attempts to acquire Rubio from the Minnesota Timberwolves in the offseason, per sources. It’s unclear if that interest remains, but Rubio would fit the mold of a two-way contributor. He is one of the 49 players who had positive real plus-minus ratings on both offense and defense last season,” Begley wrote.

Rubio will undeniably be a great fit with the Knicks’ system. The Knicks plan to use the triangle offense next season which needs a pass-first point guard like Rubio. As of now, it remains unknown what the Knicks will offer to acquire Rubio from Minnesota.

Timberwolves finding Ricky Rubio’s replacement in free agency

However, the Timberwolves are already making contingency plans in case Rubio will be traded this offseason. According to Darren Wolfson of ESPN 1500, if they will succeed to move Rubio, the Timberwolves plan to find their new starting point guard in the free agency market.

As Wolfson notes, the Timberwolves expressed interest in signing Jrue Holiday, George Hill, and Jeff Teague. Any of the three point guards will undeniably be a great addition in Minnesota. However, they must consider a point guard who fits in the timeline of Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns.

This makes Holiday the best option for the Timberwolves. However, they will be having a strong competition in signing Holiday. Several NBA teams also expressed interest in acquiring him this summer.
