The future of Russell Westbrook with the Oklahoma City Thunder has been in question ever since Kevin Durant left town and signed with the Golden State Warriors. According to the latest NBA rumors and ESPN analyst Jalen Rose, Westbrook should demand a trade to the San Antonio Spurs if he wants to win championships.
Westbrook has been linked with teams such as the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics but the Thunder front office has insisted that they want to work out a contract extension first before trading their best player.
On the other hand, the Spurs are looking to improve their roster following the retirement of Tim Duncan as well as the revamping made by the Warriors. In a recent appearance on ESPN’s First Take, Rose explained why Westbrook should choose to join the Spurs rather than the Lakers, Celtics or Knicks.
“If he wants to go to a team that has a championship pedigree, pack up right now and go to San Antonio. Because they have Kawhi Leonard andLaMarcus Aldridge, the only team in the league whose forwards led them in scoring, they play a lot on the wings,” Rose said, via 247Sports.
“Now, you put him on the top of the floor, he led the league in triple-doubles, that would be insane. And Sam Presti is from the Spurs tree, he’s really good friends with Coach Popovich. That deal could possibly get done,” he added.
However, the former NBA player admitted that it will be difficult to make a trade work between the Thunder and Spurs. He noted that a third team like the Celtics is needed to pull off a deal. But if ever Westbrook joins the Spurs, it is a tough blow for the Thunder and their fans as their two greatest players ever joined their rivals to win a title.
