Rumors and speculations are now swirling around the San Antonio Spurs who are reportedly targeting Oklahoma City Thunder star forward Kevin Durant and Memphis Grizzlies guard Mike Conley in the free agency market once Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili announce retirement.
The rumors started after the Spurs’ disappointing loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs. According to Tom Orsborn of San Antonio Express-News, coach Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs are already making back up plans once two of their main men, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, retire and decides not to play next season.
“It could be weeks before the Spurs know whether Duncan and Ginobili will return for a 20th and 15th season, respectively. It’s also uncertain what the Spurs will do in free agency. They’ve been linked to Durant and Memphis Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley, but salary-cap space would have to be cleared for the Spurs to be major players again in free agency, meaning some core players would have to be traded.”
Mike Conley and Kevin Durant will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and they are expected to play for another franchise next season. Durant has been targeted by most NBA teams and competition in signing the Thunder superstar will be a little bit tougher than the other free agents on the list. However, Durant already stated that he will prefer a more competitive team to play next season than teams who are still in a rebuilding process. Spurs can be one of the team who has a higher chance of getting Durant.
However, the Spurs need to release a huge salary cap in order to create space for their free agent targets. Based on a previous report, there is a possibility for the Spurs to trade their main man Tony Parker. Are Spurs planning to build a younger roster next season? There is a larger possibility. The Spurs are already curving their future with Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge in the middle so chances are, they will be having a younger roster next season.
However, if Duncan and Ginobili decided to continue their journey in the league, things are expected to be different. Given the San Antonio Spurs’ capability to compete with any NBA teams despite their ageing line up, it is not a surprise that they will still entrust their future to their main men, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker.
