The Timberwolves selected point guard Kris Dunn with the fifth overall pick in this year’s draft which puts the future of Ricky Rubio in Minnesota in doubt. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Philadelphia 76ers may acquire Rubio from the Timberwolves in exchange for Nerlens Noel.

The Sixers have been shopping Noel and Jahlil Okafor even before the draft and they were hoping to get the No. 3 pick from the Boston Celtics. Philadelphia was looking to get Kris Dunn with that pick but the Celtics did not accept the trade that will send Noel, Robert Covington and two picks to Boston.

According to Eric in Madison of Canis Hoopus, the Sixers also offered Noel to Minnesota for the No. 5 that turned out to be Dunn as the Celtics opted to select Jaylen Brown. Now that the draft is over, Philadelphia will still look to trade Noel and/or Okafor and the Timberwolves seems to be the perfect partner.

The Sixers can offer Nerlens Noel straight up for Ricky Rubio and it would be a perfect fit for both teams. The Timberwolves will be receiving a player to compliment Karl-Anthony Towns while the Sixers will get a starting point guard.

Even though Ben Simmons is projected as the team’s primary playmaker, it would be smart to have a real point guard in his first year to ease up the process. However, these are all just rumors but expect more to come as the NBA offseason kicks into an even higher gear.

When Twin Cities Pioneer Press asked about the potential of Rubio and Dunn playing together next season, Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau noted that anyone could be traded. However, he did not say who but he’s happy they have players that can facilitate and play defense.

“I think they have good size; they have good toughness. It’s a different look. I think you’re seeing that more and more now, where you have two point guards on the floor. They’re both capable of playing off each other,” Thibodeau said.
