A month before the 2017 NBA draft, the Philadelphia 76ers need to decide what to do with the third overall pick. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Sixers will trade Jahlil Okafor, the No. 3 pick, and a 2018 first-round pick to the Boston Celtics for the No. 1 overall pick.

The Sixers currently have one of the most promising frontcourts in the league. In the 2016-17 NBA season, Joel Embiid and Dario Saric showed their capability to lead the Sixers in the succeeding years. Meanwhile, Ben Simmons, the No.1 overall pick of the 2016 NBA draft, will be joining the Sixers next season.

Should the Sixers trade for the No. 1 overall pick?

In the upcoming offseason, the Sixers will focus on upgrading their backcourt. The 2017 NBA draft will be loaded with talented guards like Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball. However, most mock drafts predict the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers picking the two guards. Matt Mullin and Rich Hofmann of created a scenario that will give the Sixers the opportunity to acquire Fultz.

In the suggested trade scenario, the Sixers will be engaging a deal with the Boston Celtics. The Sixers will send Jahlil Okafor, the No. 3 pick, and their own 2018 first-round pick to Boston for the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA draft. The deal will definitely benefit both teams in filling up the needs to improve on their roster.

The Celtics have long been eyeing to acquire Okafor last summer but the Sixers’ asking price was too much. However, with his performance this season, Okafor’s trade value dropped. With the emergence of Isaiah Thomas, Markelle Fultz proved to be an odd fit in Boston.

Acquiring the third overall pick will enable the Celtics to add another swingman which could possibly be Josh Jackson. Hoffman believes the trade is a no-brainer for the Sixers. However, he added that there is a 99.9 percent chance that the Celtics wouldn’t proceed with the trade.

Why the Celtics should not proceed with the trade?

Despite the assets they will get for trading the No. 1 pick, the Celtics should think twice before agreeing with the proposed deal. They are currently on the right path to becoming a title contender. Instead of trading the No. 1 pick for a disgruntled big man like Jahlil Okafor and two first-rounders, the Celtics could use it to acquire another superstar this summer.

Superstars like Paul George and Carmelo Anthony are expected to be available on the trade market which will strengthen the Celtics’ chance of dominating the Eastern Conference next season. The Celtics may also choose to draft Fultz. Unlike what other people think, Fultz and Thomas believe they can play together in one team.
