The NBA offseason was in full swing on Wednesday as Derrick Rose and Jeff Teague found new homes. While these trades do not directly affect the San Antonio Spurs, the latest NBA rumors suggest that they are now the favorites to sign Mike Conley this summer.
The Chicago Bulls traded Rose to the New York Knicks while the Atlanta Hawks Teague was shipped to the Indiana Pacers in a three-team deal that also involved the Utah Jazz. But how do these moves affect the Spurs’ pursuit of Conley?
San Antonio won a franchise-best 67 wins last season but their age finally caught up with them as the Oklahoma City Thunder eliminated them in the Western Conference semifinals in six games. The Spurs are looking to get younger and they will try to convince Kevin Durant to sign them.
However, Conley is a more realistic target for the Spurs as he is an upgrade to Tony Parker, Patty Mills, and Andre Miller. He is a defensive guard while also possessing the ability to score and create on offense.
The Knicks and Pacers were linked with Conley but with the acquisition of both Rose and Teague, they are likely out of the running. According to Ian Smith of Air Alamo, the Spurs are now in a position to sign Conley but expect other teams to pursue him.
The Dallas Mavericks, Brooklyn Nets and of course, the Memphis Grizzlies will be interested in signing Conley but the Spurs offer him the best chance to win a championship. The Nets are a mess while the Grizzlies and Mavericks are not the teams to beat in the West.
The Warriors, Thunder, and Spurs are still the top dogs in the West and Conley will be welcomed in San Antonio. Patrick Britton of The Score noted in his report that the 28-year-old is interested in signing with the Mavericks and Spurs.
