The San Antonio Spurs will be playing the 2016-17 NBA season without Tim Duncan on their side. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Spurs will be trading Patty Mills and Danny Green to acquire big man Jahlil Okafor from the Philadelphia 76ers.
The San Antonio Spurs are one of the NBA teams who are considered a title contender next season. Some of their key players might be on the verge of retirement but the Spurs are still considered as one of the best teams in the Western Conference.
The retirement of Tim Duncan created a hole in the Spurs’ frontcourt. Though they acquired Pau Gasol in the recent free agency, no one can deny the fact that he is already ageing and a player past his prime.
With this, acquiring a young big man will help the San Antonio Spurs continue their legacy for the succeeding years. The Spurs have been involved in NBA rumors in the past months mainly pertaining to their interest to acquire Jahlil Okafor from the Philadelphia 76ers.
The arrival of Dario Saric, Ben Simmons, and Joel Embiid created a logjam in the Sixers’ frontcourt. The names of Nerlens Noel and Jahlil Okafor have been part of various trade rumors and there were reports that the Sixers are eyeing for guards in return in possible deals.
In a suggested trade scenario, the Spurs could offer Patty Mills and Danny Green to acquire Jahlil Okafor. Mills and Green will undeniably bolster the Sixers’ backcourt which they really need to see the effectiveness of their rebuilding process.
Meanwhile, the acquisition of Jahlil Okafor will give the Spurs a young frontcourt. Coach Gregg Popovich, together with LaMarcus Aldridge, will guide him to improve his post-up play. Okafor would benefit from the Spurs’ pick-and-role play as the team’s system has been seen rich in discipline and patient teamwork.
