Stephen Curry will be a free agent after the 2016-2017 NBA season but there are already NBA rumors of a possible clash with their newest acquisition in Kevin Durant. If Curry and Durant do not win the NBA title next season despite having a “super team” and if they have problems with their offensive roles for the Warriors, there is a likely chance that Curry leaves next year.
Kevin Durant signed a two-year deal worth nearly $55 million with the Warriors this summer. However, the second year of the deal is a player option, which means KD can choose to leave Golden State in the 2017 offseason. This is the same year that Curry will hit free agency and expected to get the full max deal either from the Warriors or another NBA team.
According to Ric Bucher of The Bleacher Report, an unnamed “title contender” will be chasing Stephen Curry in free agency next year.
According to Bucher, there is a confirmed “mystery contender” that will be aggressive in trying to lure away Curry away from Durant and the Warriors. It suggested that the offensive roles of the two superstars will clash in Golden State.
Among the title contenders next season, the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers all have starting quality point guards and are unlikely to chase Stephen Curry.
Stephen Curry to San Antonio Spurs or Houston Rockets?
Other contenders, that want to upgrade the point guard position in the future include teh San Antonio Spurs, with an aging Tony Parker and the Houston Rockets, with average PG Patrick Beverley. Could the Spurs or Rockets be the “mystery” team the report is referring to?
Curry has mostly been the “go-to-guy” with the Warriors the last two seasons. The arrival of Durant will change a lot in Golden State and he might take away those crunchtime shots from Curry.
It remains to be seen how Curry will take this change in role. After a season when they beat the Chicago Bulls’ 72-10 record, the Warriors have even more pressure on their side to deliver great numbers in the regular season as well as bring the title back to Golden State after they choked in the 2016 NBA Finals against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Will Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant clash in Golden State? The super team also includes other stars like Draymond Green and Klay Thompson, if it doesn’t work out for the Warriors next season, the NBA rumors of their stars leaving in 2017 are expected to be in the headlines after the new season.
