Rumors and speculations are now swirling around the Golden State Warriors who is reportedly targeting Charlotte Hornets assistant coach Stephen Silas to replace Luke Walton as Steve Kerr’s lead assistant.
The Golden State Warriors started their search for the new assistant coach after Luke Walton was officially declared as the Los Angeles Lakers head coach. Walton replaced Byron Scott after establishing a disappointing season with the Lakers. Walton is now challenged to a new role in rebuilding the Lakers‘ legacy, especially with the post-Kobe Bryant era.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, the Warriors asked permission from the Charlotte Hornets on Friday to discuss the Warrior’s top assistant-coaching job with Stephen Silas. The Warriors are quickly making their moves since Silas is also a top candidate in the Houston Rockets.
Based on a previous report, the Warriors first targeted Jeff Hornacek for the lead assistant role but after taking a long time, Hornacek became the emerging candidate to be the next New York Knicks head coach. Though they still have a promising talent like Jarron Collins in their staff, the Warriors might consider a person with a more coaching experience in the league. The team is also thinking of broadening Collins’ experience before engaging him to a more complicated role in the NBA since he is reportedly being groomed to be Kerr’s successor.
Stephen Silas is also an emerging candidate for the Rockets’ top assistant job. Since Silas is not the lead assistant in the Charlotte Hornets, it is best for him to accept offers to be promoted as an assistant coach. However, he will be choosing between two top teams in the league. If he has chosen the Houston Rockets, it will be a challenging role for him to rebuild the team and mentor superstar like James Harden in improving his defense.
On the other hand, if Stephen Silas will consider the Warriors’ job, it might be a one-time opportunity to be part of the team who has a higher ability in contending for the NBA championship title. However, until the announcement is not officially revealed, the Warriors’ assistant coaching vacancy is still an available position for everyone who wants to land the job.
Another potential candidate for the Warriors’ job is Brian Shaw, who is also taking a strong consideration from the Los Angeles Lakers and the Indiana Pacers.
