The latest NBA rumors are stating that the Minnesota Timberwolves could be choosing between veteran mentors Tim Thibodeau or Jeff Van Gundy as their next head coach.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports is reporting that the Timberwolves camp have set up separate meetings with both coach “Thibs” and “JVG” with majority owner Glen Taylor part of Minnesota’s representatives, according.
Thibodeau was fired after last season by the Chicago Bulls after five years with the team (2010 to 2015). He started coaching in the NBA as an assistant for various squads since 1989. Meanwhile, Van Gundy coached the New York Knicks (1996 to 2001) and the Houston Rockets (2003 to 2007) but has focused on being a basketball commentator the last eight years.
The Timberwolves struggled again in the recently concluded regular season and will be in the lottery again. However, they have one of the youngest and most promising teams in the entire league with a roster featuring Andrew Wiggins, Zach Lavine, Ricky Rubio and Karl-Anthony Towns.
NBA rumors will focus on the Timberwolves roster this offseason but first hiring a head coach would be one of the first moves for the franchise.
With a young roster, they are expected to improve in the next few years and a veteran coach like Thibodeau or Van Gundy could help them battle for a playoff spot in the next few seasons.
Both Thibodeau and Van Gundy are known for their defense-first philosophy with the teams they handled in their NBA coaching careers and this NBA rumor could very well true because Minnesota wants to improve on that end of the floor.
