San Antonio Spurs Tony Parker is currently recovering from the injury he suffered during their Western Conference Semifinals series against the Houston Rockets. Recently, Parker revealed that he will return with the Spurs in the 2017-18 NBA season.

“I will play my best basketball when I return in January”, Parker told L’Equipe (h/t Parker still has a one year left on his contract with the Spurs worth $15.4 million. After the 2017-18 season, he will become an unrestricted free agent and may decide to put his NBA career to an end.

Tony Parker believes Spurs can defeat GSW in West Finals

Tony Parker expressed his frustration after suffering an injury in the Western Conference Semifinals. Coach Gregg Popovich decided to limit his minutes in the regular reason to make sure that he’s at 100 percent in the postseason. Unfortunately, the French point guard suffered a ruptured left quadriceps tendon that required a season-ending surgery.

“The first thing that came in when I got injured was frustration,” Parker told L’Equipe. “I was super good, and we had the chance to go until the end and get the title. The coach’s plan worked like a clock. I was consistent, playing for 20-25 minutes per game. My series against Memphis was good, and I had a good start to the season.”

Even without Parker, the Spurs managed to defeat the Rockets and advanced to the Western Conference Finals. Unfortunately, they lost Kawhi Leonard in Game 1 after re-aggravating his ankle injury. Leonard never returned in the series causing the Warriors to easily sweep the Spurs.

If Parker and Leonard remain healthy, there is no doubt that the Spurs can dethrone the West champs. The Spurs had the full control of the game before Leonard suffered an injury. However, all they can do now is improve their game to be able to return in the NBA Finals next season.

Spurs start looking for Tony Parker’s replacement

Since the Spurs were eliminated in the playoffs, rumors continue to swirl that they are interested in acquiring Chris Paul in the upcoming free agency. With Parker already on the verge of retirement, it’s not a surprise that the Spurs are already looking for his replacement who can work alongside Kawhi Leonard.

However, the problem is the Spurs don’t have enough salary cap to sign Paul this summer. With Parker’s intention to return next season, this would prevent the Spurs from paying a free agent of Paul’s caliber. Aside from CP3, Derrick Rose also emerged as a potential target for the Spurs in free agency.
