The Minnesota Timberwolves are eyeing to improve their roster this summer in order to become a legitimate playoff contender next season. According to the latest NBA rumors, the Timberwolves will consider trading their 2017 first-round pick and target Taj Gibson in free agency.

The Timberwolves ended the 2016-17 NBA season as the third worst team in the Western Conference. They failed to live up to expectations despite the massive improvements of Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins. As most people think, their current roster is not enough to end their playoff drought.

NBA Rumors: Minnesota Timberwolves trading 2017 first-round pick

The Timberwolves are now focused in the upcoming offseason. The NBA draft lottery will be held on Tuesday night where Andrew Wiggins will be Minnesota’s representative. Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor revealed that they are open for the possibility of trading their 2017 first-round pick.

“I think once we get there, there’s always a possibility to do a trade or move up or down — probably down,” Wolves owner Glen Taylor said. “You’d trade No. 6 for No. 15 or something like that and get a player that could help us. There’s just a lot of things. But at this point, we haven’t looked at any of those just because we’ve got to see where we end up. If you end up for some reason at Nos. 1, 2 or 3, you’re very unlikely to trade it.”

According to Charley Walters of TwinCities.com, the Timberwolves only have 5.3 percent chance of landing the No. 1 overall pick and 18.2 percent chance of acquiring a top-three pick. They are currently in a strong position to get the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft. If they fall outside the top-three pick, the Timberwolves will likely trade their 2017 first-round pick.

NBA Free Agency: Taj Gibson to Minnesota Timberwolves in free agency

The Timberwolves are mostly consist of young players with an average team age 25.7 years. They obviously don’t need more young players and should consider adding veterans to become a legitimate playoff contender. Timberwolves president of basketball operations and head coach Tom Thibodeau reportedly wanted to reunite with some of his Chicago Bulls players.

Walters believes Taj Gibson will be on the Timberwolves’ radar in the upcoming offseason. Gibson, who finished the season with the Oklahoma City Thunder, will become an unrestricted free agent this summer. He will undeniably be a great addition to Minnesota playing alongside Karl-Anthony Towns in their frontcourt.

“We haven’t talked about any individuals or anything like that yet,” Taylor said. “We’re just trying to get ourselves past this lottery and the draft and see where we stand. Then we have the free agency thing.”
