Nick Young could possibly leave the Los Angeles Lakers after the 2016-17 NBA season. According to the latest report, Swaggy P plans to opt out of his contract if the Lakers select UCLA Bruins star Lonzo Ball in the 2017 NBA draft.
The 2016-17 NBA season marked the revival of Young’s basketball career. The 2015-16 NBA season didn’t go well for the veteran shooting guard under coach Byron Scott. His dispute with D’Angelo Russell almost ruined his career before coach Luke Walton arrived in Los Angeles.
Walton decided to give Nick Young a second chance to prove himself with the Lakers. Young started by fixing his relationship with Russell. Fortunately, Swaggy P managed to regain his rhythm and became the Lakers’ starting shooting guard. In 60 games, this season, he averaged 13.2 points on 41.9 percent shooting from the field and 40.4 percent from beyond the arc.
Nick Young leaving the Lakers because of the Ball family
The Lakers ended the season having the third-worst regular season record in the league. This gives them a higher chance of keeping their 2017 first-round pick and add another talented asset on their roster. Most mock drafts predict the Lakers selecting Lonzo Ball in the upcoming draft.
Ball recently expressed his interest in playing for the Lakers, saying he would rather join the purple and gold than becoming the No. 1 overall pick. In an exit interview, Nick Young revealed that he will opt out of his contract if the Lakers draft Ball. Swaggy P believes that the existence of him and the Ball family would be too much for the franchise.
“If we get the top-three pick, we might have the Ball family come in here talking crazy,” Young said, smiling. “It’s kind of hard when you got a Ball family and a Swaggy P talking crazy. Kind of too much.”
Lonzo Ball wouldn’t be an issue for the Lakers but his father, LaVar, will surely be. LaVar Ball made numerous controversial statements recently and became one of the most intriguing personalities in the league. Young may only be joking about his recent comment but LaVar will undeniably create more noise once his son officially joins the Lakers.
Nick Young will consider playing for a playoff team next season
Nick Young revealed that he enjoyed seeing the development of the Lakers young core. However, he opens the possibility that he may leave the Lakers to join a playoff team next season.
“I’ll be more of a vet here,” Young said. “But at my age, I don’t know if I kind of want to sit around and wait for another team to progress and grow. [I] kind of want to be on a playoff team and see what happens.”
