The Boston Celtics has been trying to acquire a third superstar like Jimmy Butler, DeMarcus Cousins and Blake Griffin this offseason but nothing has come to fruition. However, the latest NBA rumors suggest that the Celtics could go after Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Celtics have a great roster that can make it to the Eastern Conference Finals this season but they don’t have enough firepower to dethrone the Cleveland Cavaliers. But they have young assets and coveted draft picks that can help them get a superstar at the deadline.
According to Jeremiah Engelmann of ESPN Insider, the Celtics are waiting for a big trade that probably involves players such as Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley, Jaylen Brown, and Jae Crowder. They also have two first-round picks from the Brooklyn Nets.
“The Celtics should probably wait another year before making big moves. On the other hand, if a star becomes disgruntled and demands a trade — I think Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins are strong candidates here — the Celtics might want to pull the trigger,” Engelmann noted.
The mention of Davis is a little bit surprising considering he is the face of the New Orleans Pelicans franchise. The team made the playoffs in 2015 and they appear to be moving towards that again this season. However, David Fisher of SB Nation thinks Davis will leave New Orleans in just a matter of time.
“All of recent basketball history tells us Anthony Davis will leave New Orleans. He may or may not demand a trade. He could leave in free agency four years from now or in a trade prior to that date to secure some value for the franchise,” Fisher wrote.
The Celtics already have a contender with Isaiah Thomas and Al Horford leading the way but they really need a third superstar. Anthony Davis may be a reach for Danny Ainge with DeMarcus Cousins and Jimmy Butler the easier targets since the Kings and Bulls are close to a full rebuild.
