Isaiah Thomas will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2017-2018 NBA season and be expected to demand a max contract from the Boston Celtics. According to the latest NBA trade rumors, the Celtics may consider trading Thomas this summer and draft Washington Huskies’ star Markelle Fultz.
The Celtics are one of the NBA teams who dreamt of contending for the title this season. Last summer, they managed to improve their roster with the acquisition of Al Horford in free agency. Unfortunately, they failed to get their main target, Kevin Durant. Before the Feb. 23 deadline, the Celtics were expected to make a big move and add at least one superstar on their team.
However, they still have the same roster after the All-Star break. Despite failing to add a star power, the Celtics continue to dominate and are currently the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference. The reigning NBA champions, Cleveland Cavaliers, fell to the second spot after losing to the Miami Heat on Monday night. Isaiah Thomas proved to be one of the major reasons behind the Celtics’ recent success.
NBA Trade Rumors: Celtics’ plan on Isaiah Thomas
Isaiah Thomas is currently playing his best season, averaging 29.1 points and 5.9 assists. He has been impressive since joining the Celtics in 2014. As of now, he’s the second-leading scorer in the NBA this season. Despite being an incredible scorer, the 5-foot-9 point guard is a defensive liability for the Celtics as he ranks last in ESPN’s defensive real plus-minus (RPM). His current performance may determine his value in the upcoming offseason where the Celtics can give him a contract extension.
After this season, Thomas will enter the final year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent in the 2018 offseason. ESPN has an ongoing survey on how the Celtics should handle Thomas’ contract situation. As expected, most people believe Thomas should stay in Boston. However, there are some who think the Celtics should trade him before his contract expires.
NBA Trade Rumors: Markelle Fultz as Isaiah Thomas’ replacement
The Celtics could potentially land the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft, via the Brooklyn Nets, who currently have the worst regular season record. In almost all 2017 NBA mock drafts, Washington Huskies star guard Markelle Fultz is expected to be the No. 1 pick.
With the presence of Isaiah Thomas, Fultz will be an odd fit in Boston. However, if the Celtics decide to shake up their roster and trade Thomas, Fultz will undeniably be a perfect replacement as the Celtics starting point guard. He’s not only an incredible scorer but could also boost the Celtics’ defense.
