Taj Gibson of the Chicago Bulls is available for trade, according to the latest NBA rumors. Should contenders like the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors look to jump at the chance of adding a solid and defensive big man in their roster?
According to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times, Gibson is being made available by the Bulls, as per league sources. Chicago is reportedly talking to “several teams” this summer and that Gibson may be moved if the Bulls find a worthy trade.
The move is seen as a cost-cutting move for the Bulls squad, which also has Robin Lopez (acquired in the Derrick Rose trade with the New York Knicks), Nikola Mirotic, Bobby Portis and Cristiano Felicio.
The report adds that the Bulls’ cutting salary won’t be for the 2016 offseason but for next year’s batch of free agents. Possibly hitting the market next year are Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors), Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder), Blake Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks), Chris Paul (Clippers), Rudy Gobert (Utah Jazz) and Gordon Hayward (Jazz).
Gibson has two years left in his deal worth over $17 million. He will be an unrestricted free agent by 2017 and the Bulls want to get value from him or lose him in free agency after the season.
The Bulls are in some sort of rebuilding after trading away Rose to New York last week. Gibson is already 31 years old and he might not fit in the long-term plans of the Bulls that’s why he’s part of the latest NBA trade rumors.
The Warriors and Spurs are two of the powerhouse teams in the league but they can add Gibson either as a starter or off the bench player. Gibson is known for his energy and defense and both teams need frontcourt help next season.
It’s not clear how the Warriors and Spurs can acquire Gibson but it’s possible that they include short-term contracts plus future draft picks to make a deal work with the Bulls.
Gibson will be one of the best available talent in the trade market this season especially for the title contenders, if the NBA trade rumors are true then the Warriors or Spurs might explore a deal for the Bulls’ big man.
