The Sacramento Kings started the preseason with a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. However, there is a growing optimism in the ‘City of Trees’ that coach Dave Joerger will help the Kings lock DeMarcus Cousins in the succeeding years.
In the past months, DeMarcus Cousins has been linked to various trade rumors after the Sacramento Kings selected Georgios Papagiannis and Skal Labissiere in the 2016 NBA draft. It seems awkward for the Kings to add players with the same position as ‘Boogie’ when they are actually in need of a backcourt boost.
With the start of preseason, the Kings lost to Los Angeles Lakers but DeMarcus Cousins’ performance has remarkably improved under coach Dave Joerger. The Kings will be having a new system that will let ‘Boogie’ be more of a facilitator while continuing to be a scoring threat.
Coach Dave Joerger decided to use DeMarcus Cousins in high post more. He also wants his players to avoid staring at ‘Boogie’ when he is holding the ball. With this system, the focus of the opposing team’s defense will not be centered on Cousins.
“A lot of learning,” Cousins said after Monday’s practice. “It’s a new system, of course, a lot of options, man. The offense is different. I think it’s a good look for our team. I think this will help this team get to the next level. So it’s about us getting the system down pat and getting these options, a lot of options.”
DeMarcus Cousins has been known for having issues with coaches and teammates. However, with the current situation, it seems like ‘Boogie’ will enjoy the upcoming season with Joerger. Cousins also praised guard Ty Lawson with his quickness inside the court.
If the Kings end their playoff drought in the upcoming season, there are speculations that DeMarcus Cousins will be offered to sign an extension to prevent him from becoming a free agent in 2018. However, if their struggle continues, ‘Boogie’ is expected to demand a trade with Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers as potential destinations.
The relationship of coach Dave Joerger with the Kings’ franchise player is expected to have a major effect on DeMarcus Cousins’ decision to stay in Sacramento.
