NBA stars Andre Drummond and Isaiah Thomas fueled trade speculations with their recent tweets. Few days before the Feb. 23 trade deadline, the Boston Celtics could acquire another big man to pair with Al Horford. Will the Detroit Pistons trade Drummond?
Pistons head coach and president of basketball operations Stan Van Gundy revealed in the past that anyone on their roster is available for the right price. This means that even rising stars Reggie Jackson and Andre Drummond could be traded if a team makes a good offer. ESPN’s Zach Lowe revealed the Pistons have “quietly explored” the trade market for their franchise players but came away disappointed with the potential return.
Andre Drummond to Boston Celtics
On Monday night, Celtics star guard Isaiah Thomas hinted a possible trade with only a simple tweet of a wide-eyed emoji. Jay King of Masslive.com revealed that Thomas made the same tweet when the Celtics acquired Al Horford in the recent free agency. This time the Celtics could be targeting Pistons center, Andre Drummond.
Drummond’s action on Twitter created the speculation that he could be headed to Boston. Drummond retweeted Thomas’ original tweet and then followed up with one of his own on Tuesday. He also removed the Pistons from his bio and changed his profile picture.
It will not be a surprise if the Celtics are really pursuing Drummond. After acquiring Horford last summer, the Celtics continue to be active on the trade market looking for another big man. Acquiring a big man like Drummond lets Horford slide to his normal position at power forward.
Also, Boston has plenty of trade assets to make a blockbuster deal. When they failed to acquire Kevin Durant, Celtics general manager Danny Ainge revealed that they’re not done yet in upgrading their roster. The Celtics will not surely let the Feb. 23 deadline pass without acquiring a superstar.
As of now, the Celtics are the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference just two wins behind the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite their incredible performance this season, their current roster is obviously not enough to dethrone the Cavaliers. If they are serious about contending for the title, the Celtics should add another star on their team.
Andre Drummond shuts down speculations
So far, there is no official confirmation whether a trade discussion is happening between the Celtics and the Pistons. Andre Drummond already shut down the speculations that his recent action in the social media has something to do with the nearing trade deadline.
“What’s it got to do with my team? Worry about the second half of the season, I can’t control what happens in the trade rumors. I’m just here to play basketball,” Drummond said. “If I get traded, I get traded. If I don’t, I don’t. I’m here to play.”
