The Los Angeles Lakers appeared to be the top trade destination for Paul George in the upcoming offseason. The latest report revealed that the Lakers are willing to sacrifice multiple young assets to acquire George this summer.
After the Indiana Pacers suffered an early exit in the Eastern Conference playoffs, rumors swirling around Paul George started to circulate once again. Before the trade deadline, George admitted that he isn’t yet decided whether to sign a massive contract extension with the Pacers or not. He’s set to become a free agent in 2018 where the Pacers could lose him for nothing.
As most people think, it’ll be best for the Pacers to let George go and undergo a full-scale rebuild. The Pacers star will undeniably bring back interesting assets Indiana needs to speed up the rebuilding process. In the past months, one NBA team has been frequently mentioned in every trade rumors involving George, his hometown team Los Angeles Lakers.
Paul George to Los Angeles Lakers becoming a reality
After Kobe Bryant retired, some people believed that the purple and gold will be an attractive destination for superstars. The Lakers tried to find his replacement in the free agency. They targeted Kevin Durant and Hassan Whiteside but failed to even get appointments from the two superstars.
The Lakers ended up acquiring Luol Deng and Timofey Mozgov, who are currently considered as the worst signings of the 2016 NBA free agency. After suffering another disappointing season, the Lakers decided to make a huge change. They fired Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak and replaced them with Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka.
The 2017 offseason will show if Lakers owner Jeanie Buss made the right decision for the franchise. Johnson started making moves before the trade deadline. He traded several veterans for young assets and draft picks. Johnson also tried to bring a superstar to Los Angeles. Unfortunately, he failed to reach an agreement with the Pacers involving Paul George.
What can the Lakers sacrifice for Paul George?
George reportedly wants to play for the Lakers once he becomes a free agent in 2018. If the Pacers will make him available this summer, the Lakers are expected to be one of the NBA teams who will pursue him on the trade market. The Lakers currently have a plethora of trade assets to make a deal with the Pacers.
In ESPN’s Zach Lowe’s recent piece about the Toronto Raptors, he mentioned that the Lakers “will dangle prospects” for George. This means that the Lakers are seriously considering acquiring the Pacers star either via trade or free agency. The Lakers revealed that no one will be untouchable this summer. It will be interesting to see how far they can go to bring a superstar in Los Angeles.
