Washington Huskies star Markelle Fultz believes he will be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft despite Lonzo Ball’s claim that he’s better than him. Aside from being the top selection, Fultz also wants to become the Rookie of the Year and the Most Valuable Player next season.
“No. 1 is big for me because I’ve been dreaming about it all my life. I want to come in and kill it. I want to be rookie of the year … honestly, me? I want to be MVP next year,” Fultz said.
Fultz remains optimistic that his first NBA season will go as he expected. Winning the Rookie of the Year award is somewhat expected for Fultz since he’s projected to be the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft. However, becoming an MVP next season will be a shot to the moon as he needs to surpass the likes of Russell Westbrook and James Harden.
2017 NBA Draft: Markelle Fultz vs Lonzo Ball
Markell Fultz and Lonzo Ball are currently the top favorites to be the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA draft. In most mock drafts, Fultz frequently lands the top spot while Ball sits at No. 2. However, the UCLA Bruins star believes he’s a better player than Fultz.
“Markelle’s a great player, but I feel I’m better than him,” said Ball, who led the Bruins to a pair of blowout victories over Fultz’s Huskies this season. “I think I can lead a team better than him. Obviously, he’s a great scorer — he’s a great player, so I’m not taking that away from him.”
This season, the Huskies star averaged 23.2 points, 5.9 assists, and 5.7 rebounds on 47.6 percent shooting from the field and 41.3 percent from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Ball averaged 14.6 points, 7.6 assists, and six rebounds on 55.1 percent shooting from the field and 41.2 percent from beyond the arc. Fultz is undeniably the better scorer but Ball proves to be better in rebounding and assists.
Markell Fultz reacts to Lonzo Ball’s comments
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Fultz gave his reaction to Ball’s recent comment on him. Fultz said he uses the ongoing rivalry between him and Ball to work harder and improve his game.
“I have a lot of respect for him, and he’s supposed to say that. Anyone that’s your competitor is going to think that they’re better,” Fultz said in an interview with SI Now. “To me, it was just funny, he just motivated me to work harder and be sure I put myself further and further in front.”
Ball isn’t really targeting to be the No.1 overall pick. He recently claimed that he would rather join the Los Angeles Lakers than being the top selection. In the upcoming draft, the Boston Celtics are expected to use the Brooklyn Nets’ pick to draft Fultz.
