Arizona Cardinals are going young with Deshaun Watson or going for experience with Tony Romo. The Cardinals are still waiting for the decision of Carson Palmer if he wants to retire from the NFL this season. In the meantime, there are NFL rumors that the Cardinals are willing to trade up in the 2017 NFL Draft and pick quarterback prospect Deshaun Watson.
Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports stated that Watson is an option if Palmer retires. He also mentioned other quarterbacks available in the market like Tony Romo and Tyrod Taylor.
Cardinals’ QB situation depends on Carson Palmer’s retirement plans
“If Carson Palmer retires, Romo could be an option in Arizona. And sources said the Cardinals are very high on Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and could be prepared to trade up to land him this spring,” LaCanfor stated in a recent article.
“If the Cardinals determine Watson is out of their reach, Tyrod Taylor is very appealing to Arizona and would be a great fit in Bruce Arians’ scheme.”
The 21-year-old Watson is projected to be at least in the Top 5 or even go No. 2 overall in most NFL mock drafts this year. Watson, a junior, played for the Clemson Tigers in college football. He helped his team to two College Football Playoff National Championship games in the last three years.
Watson and the Tigers lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide, 40-45 in 2016 and they beat their rivals, 35-31 this year to get to win the national college title. He had a winning career while playing for Clemson in college. He led the team to five Bowl Games. The young QB is 4-1 in these college playoff games.
Deshaun Watson trade up or trade for Tony Romo
Watson to Arizona would depend on how the Cardinals manage their draft position. After finishing 7-8-1 this regular season, Arizona would be picking 13th overall in the 2017 draft.
Watson is projected to go high but there are also other top quarterback prospects in the early part of the draft. Mitch Trubisky, a junior from North Carolina and DeShone Kizer, a sophomore from Notre Dame joins Watson as projected first round talents in the rookie selection.
Tony Romo is available for trade from the Dallas Cowboys. The team already has promising rookie Dak Prescott, who took the starting job in Dallas after injury to Romo earlier this season. The Cowboys could demand future picks from interested picks for Romo.
Taylor is under contract for the Buffalo Bills until the 2021 season. But there are NFL rumors that he could be made available by the Bills in a trade this offseason.
