As the 2017 NFL Draft draws near, rumors and speculations continue to swirl about a possible trade between the Chicago Bears and the San Francisco 49ers. According to the latest NFL trade rumors, the Bears are willing to trade for the No. 2 overall pick if the Cleveland Browns select Mitchell Trubisky instead of Myles Garrett.
In the recent offseason, the Bears decided to part ways with Jay Cutler and signed Mike Glennon to a three-year, $45 million as their new starting quarterback. They also added Mark Sanchez as Glennon’s backup. However, Chicago’s search for QB continues and the Bears are reportedly eyeing to acquire one in the upcoming NFL draft.
Chicago Bears selecting a QB in the 2017 NFL Draft
Despite acquiring Mike Glennon, Dane Brugler of CBS Sports believes the Bears will use the No. 3 overall pick to acquire a franchise quarterback. With the Cleveland Browns expected to select Myles Garrett at No. 1, the Bears could pick either North Carolina’s Mitchell Trubisky or Clemson’s Deshaun Watson.
“For many, once the Bears signed Mike Glennon, that eliminated the notion of Chicago drafting a quarterback at No. 3 overall,” Brugler said. “But there are several around the league who aren’t convinced, pointing to Trubisky or Watson as likely candidates. Glennon signed a contract worth starter money, but he is far from a proven commodity. On the surface, his deal (three years, $45 million) looks like it would preclude drafting a quarterback high, but it includes only $18.5 million guaranteed and could end up being only a one-year deal.”
Acquiring a quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft would be a practical move for the Bears. The way they set up Glennon’s contract gives them full control to move him if he fails to live up to expectations. However, their plan will be ruined if the Browns select Trubisky as the No. 1 overall pick instead of Myles Garrett. Cleveland may consider doing such move if they fail to acquire Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots.
Chicago Bears trading with the San Francisco 49ers for the No. 2 pick
Aside from the Bears and the Browns, several NFL teams are headed to the 2017 NFL Draft looking for a quarterback. These include the San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, and the Buffalo Bills. According to John Mullin of CSN Chicago, the Bears may consider a trade to ensure they get a quarterback.
49ers general manager John Lynch revealed that they’re willing to trade the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. The 49ers are reportedly eyeing to acquire Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas. If the Browns pass on Myles Garrett and select Mitchell Trubisky, the Bears should consider trading the No. 3 overall pick together with future round picks to San Francisco.
