Colin Kaepernick was once considered one of the top quarterbacks in the league. NFL rumors now have the San Francisco 49ers quarterback fighting for a starting QB spot with his team and could be a backup to Blaine Gabbert for the new NFL season.
According to the East Bay Times, Gabbert is the current starting QB for the 49ers after having a better offseason and camp.
“I’m in a situation where I’m a little bit behind. Because I am rehabbing to get back to 100 percent where I can start training. So, at this point, there’s a lot of work to be done,” Kaepernick said in the article admitting that he has lost the starting job in San Francisco and after he was involved in a lot of NFL rumors of being traded in recent months.
The 28-year-old Kaepernick is the highest paid player on the 49ers roster getting paid $15.8 million for the 2016 season. He will get paid about $19 million per year until 2020 with about $60 million guaranteed.
Meanwhile, Gabbert is just 26 years old and will get paid just around $2.3 million for 2016 before becoming a free agent after the season.
Should the 49ers trade Kaepernick this season or stick with him despite the big salary? Will another NFL team trade for him with the rich long-term deal?
Kaepernick is coming off surgeries to his left shoulder, left knee and right thumb and has been involved in NFL rumors throughout the 2016 offseason. He was linked in possible trades to the Denver Broncos but a deal could not be finalized between the two teams.
