The Detroit Lions are anticipating the worst for No. 1 running back Ameer Abdullah, who suffered a left foot injury in their game against the Tennessee Titans last week.
The Lions lost, 16-15 in the Week 2 match-up and Abdullah tore a ligament in his left foot, which could cause him to miss the rest of the 2016 NFL season.
Abdullah did not suit up for Detroit in their Week 3 match-up against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday and the Lions lost 34-27 to drop to 1-2 to stat this regular season. Abdullah was placed on injured reserve last Wednesday.
Abdullah had 38 rushing yards on six carries in the game versus the Titans before he went out. In their Week 1 match-up against the Indianapolis Colts, Abdullah had 63 rushing yards on 12 carries and 57 receiving yards on 5 catches with one touchdown to help the Lions to a 39-35 victory.
The 23-year-old Abdullah, who is playing in his second year in the league, can still return this season if he recovers early but it’s not likely according to NFL rumors who has knowledge of the Lions’ situation.
Detroit will use Theo Riddick, Zach Zenner and Dwayne Washington with Abdullah out for a number of months. Abdullah was a second round pick, or 54th overall pick by the Lions, in the 2015 NFL Draft.
Riddick and Washington combined for just 47 rushing yards on 20 carries in the loss to the Packers Sunday.
After the loss to their rivals Packers, the Lions will take on the Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams in their next three games.
