The New York Jets has signed Josh McCown to a one-year deal worth $6M. Reports state that the contract is fully guaranteed for the veteran quarterback. According to NFL rumors, McCown can even get the starting job in New York with the Jets lacking a true star under center next season.

“The #Jets deal for QB Josh McCown is a 1-year deal worth $6M — fully guaranteed — source said. NYJ paying big for his tutelage (and play),” Ian Rapoport of tweeted on Monday.

Jets get leader in McCown

According to reports, the Jets acquired McCown so he can be the veteran presence for the team. But there is also a chance that he can win the starting quarterback job for New York, which has QB’s Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty under contract next season.

However, Hackenberg and Petty have cheap deals and seen as a backup or third-string quarterbacks for the Jets. With McCown on board, it’s expected that the veteran quarterback will mentor both players. The Jets are rebuilding and developing quarterbacks is one of their top priorities for the long term.

New York will eventually give the starting job to Hackenberg or Petty, according to NFL rumors. For the meantime, McCown can serve as a starter and mentor both and see which one has the potential to take over under center for the Jets in the 2017 NFL Season.

“The biggest thing that stood out was his leadership. Even when he wasn’t starting, he was the glue to the locker room, the glue to the organization. No one worked harder than him. [McCown] would be the first one in or the second one in. He would be the last one to leave.

“Was there at 8 o’clock at night. He was just awesome. He did everything…. [McCown] would keep the offense together and also keep the players connected to the coaches,” Brandon Marshall stated about Josh McCown’s veteran presence with the Chicago Bears.

McCown known for his leadership

“Just an awesome man, an awesome quarterback. He is the example of what you want your kid to be. If you want to buy a jersey, that is the jersey you buy. I think you guys know who he is and how he conducts himself, how he approaches everything day to day. I can’t speak enough about him. He is the best.”

McCown has been a backup for most of his stint in the NFL. Aside from his stint in Chicago, he has suited up for the Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Cleveland Browns.
