The New York Jets could have Jay Cutler as their starting quarterback next season. The presence of Jeremy Bates, the team’s new QB coach, is the reason why Cutler is being linked to the Jets. Bates was Cutler’s QB coach while they were with the Denver Broncos.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Jets’ level of interest in Cutler would depend on what the Chicago Bears want in any trade. But the Jets can also wait for the Bears’ decision on Cutler, who will be released by the Chicago team in the coming weeks.

Cutler, who will play in his 12th NFL season, has failed in his stint with the Bears. Chicago has made the playoffs just once with Cutler under center. Some in the NFL thinks that Cutler can still be a good player with another team. With the Jets, Bates and offensive coordinator John Morton will try to help Cutler in being one of the better quarterbacks in the league.

Meanwhile, if the Jets can’t get Cutler in a trade or free agency, the team is reportedly looking at Deshaun Watson in the 2017 NFL Draft. The Jets are picking sixth overall in this year’s rookie draft. However, Watson could go as high as No. 2 in many NFL mock drafts.

The Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers pick No. 1 and No. 2 in the 2017 NFL Draft respectively. Both teams could get Watson for their future quarterback. The Bears also pick third, so letting go of Cutler could be a good move for the team.

Cutler is coming off a season when he lost his starting job in Chicago. He only played in five games due to injuries last regular season. He registered 1,059 passing yards on 81 of 137 passes with 4 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.

According to NFL rumors, the Jets front office doesn’t trust that Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg are ready to start next season. Many believe that Petty and Hackenberg are only backup QB material in the NFL. Last year, the Jets went with Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starter and the 34-year-old is not expected to return to New York.

The Jets finished at 5-11 last year, one of the worst records in the league. The Bears did worse at 3-13. Both teams are searching for new franchise quarterbacks and restart their rebuilding process.
