The road to Week 5 when Tom Brady returns from suspension just got harder for the New England Patriots with both their backup quarterbacks injured. According to the latest NFL rumors, the Patriots are interested in signing either T.J. Yates or Sean Renfree.
New England are 3-0 and they will face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday but they are without a quarterback. Tom Brady is still suspended, Jimmy Garoppolo has an injured shoulder and rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who impressed in the Patriots 27-0 win over the Houston Texans, has a sprained thumb.
According to NBC Sports, two possible options for the Patriots in free agency are T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree. Both players were brought in by the team last week to see them work out. One of them might end up as a possible backup for the game against the Bills or even as a starter.
However, NFL rumors in New England suggest that Bill Belichick and the Patriots coaching staff is very comfortable with wide receiver Julian Edelman as starting quarterback against the Bills. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk noted that getting Garoppolo and Brissett healthy is still the priority with signing a free agent as a last resort.
“Signing another quarterback is regarded, as I’m told, a last resort for the Patriots because, No. 1 they don’t want to have to cut somebody to create a roster spot for a quarterback, but No. 2 they actually would prefer to go with a Julian Edelman,” Florio said during Sunday Night Football, via NESN.com.
It should be noted that these are just NFL rumors at the moment and should be taken with a grain of salt. The Patriots still have a week to get either Garoppolo or Brissett healthy. Also, the Pats seem to be comfortable with Edelman, who last played QB in college, because he knows the offense very well.
